Unearth a Story: An Adult Studio Series Inspired by Prehistory

Prehistoric Silhouettes: Watercolor Pencil Workshop

Step back in time and explore the dramatic landscapes of the prehistoric world through color and atmosphere. In this exciting adult watercolor pencil workshop, participants will create a sunset sky. Watercolor pencil blends the best of both worlds, with the precision of pencil and the soft beauty of watercolor washes. Once the painted background is complete and dry, we will use fine tip sharpies to create silhouettes. Using reference images provided for inspiration, participants will add strong, graphic prehistoric forms, such as dinosaurs, foliage, or distant land formations, creating a striking contrast between soft color fields and bold shape. No prerequisite skills required- all are welcome.

Demonstration includes: lesson on how to use watercolor pencil, observational drawing from references, best practices for handling materials for control.

About the presenter: Jenny Santa Maria is a multifaceted talent as a teaching artist, art coach, and exhibiting artist from Farmingdale, NJ. Her work has garnered recognition in various esteemed publications, including Jersey Shore Magazine and The Wall Street Journal. Throughout her extensive career, Jenny has touched the lives of a wide-ranging audience, both within traditional classroom settings and beyond. After a decade of teaching, she drew on her experience in special education to become an art coach, empowering individuals who struggle with perfectionism, self-doubt, and anxiety to see their creative potential. Her dedication to creative empowerment has led her to work in diverse environments, from retreat centers and libraries to art museums and galleries nationwide.
